AIxGIRLS summer tech camp 2022: twenty young talents and a bet on the future
To date, the numbers show that female involvement in tech-related professions is still strongly limited (17% according to estimates by the World Economic Forum) and that ICT subjects primarily attract boys. Industry 4.0 and enabling technologies are impacting not only the productive and work world but society and the entire economy, making it essential to involve women in the conception and creation of the innovations shaping our world. This is the goal of the AIxGIRLS project, which aimed to involve, guide, and train a group of students, completing their fourth year of high school, and guide them towards a path of growth and affirmation of their talent in the AI and Data Science sector, beyond any gender limitations.
The selection, carried out through self-application, attracted the participation of many high-level female students from all over Italy, from which 20 of the most prepared and motivated were selected. “We are satisfied with the positive response that this initiative has received from the many girls who have shown interest in participating. Their appreciation is confirmation that we made the right choice in undertaking this journey together with the Donne 4.0 Association and Daxo Group. Stimulating the transition to a fairer and more accessible society for everyone is a priority,” commented Fabio Melisso, CEO of Fineco Asset Management. “Technology and innovation have always been part of the DNA of our Group, and as innovators, we want to play our part in this process. We can achieve this not only by providing efficient alternatives in investment choices but also through a tangible impact that can bring more girls to consider the scientific and mathematical fields to unfold their talent.”
A group of very young but aware girls of the context they are in. They are clear in the motivations shared to be selected among the candidates, explanatory and rational, at the same time rich in emotions and expectations for the future. There is great interest in the networking opportunity, particularly with the other girls who will participate, along with the awareness that women working in STEM fields still constitute a disproportionately small percentage, and the new generations must be part of the change. Fundamental in the project is the role of teachers and professionals who have dedicated their time to transfer exclusive knowledge and insights, such as Artificial Intelligence, Law and Ethics, Human-Computer Interaction, AI and Gender Bias, Robotics, Industrial Vision: Sara Moccia and Federica Merenda, ssistant Professors and Post-doc Researchers at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, recognized worldwide for their excellent training combined with cutting-edge scientific research, Lorenzo Di Pietrantonio, Chief Investment Officer of Fineco AM, Gabriella Campanile, GM Daxo Group and VP Donne 4.0, Roberta Russo, Donne 4.0 Deep Tech Commission, Monica Cerutti, Diversity Management – Donne 4.0 Ambassador, Marilena Hyeraci, Donne 4.0 Inclusion Commission, Elisabetta Dell’Oca, Customer Experience Specialist QuestIT, Irene Vetrò, Training Specialist, Luciana Bertoncini, AI Process Engineer, Beatrice Bettini, DEI Consultant.
Among the exceptional teachings is also Darya Majidi, the creator of the project, President of the Donne 4.0 Association, CEO of Daxo Group, and an expert in Artificial Intelligence and digital transformation, who will share her experience with the AIxGirls. “It has been an incredible team effort; I truly thank everyone,” concluded Darya Majidi. “A first step to transfer new skills but also to encourage young minds to play an active role towards gender equality. Data tells us that there is a shortage of experts in data science and AI, especially female experts in these fields. The future of our world will literally be in the hands of these systems. Finance, healthcare, politics, and media are just some of the strategic sectors now managed by artificial intelligence systems. In this context, the only way to bring female skills, sensitivities, perspectives, values, and knowledge into this sector is to invest in the new generations.”
AIxGIRLS was just the beginning of a common path that unites organizations and companies such as FAM – Fineco Asset Management, l’Donne 4.0 Association and Daxo Group which continue their commitment to a fairer and more sustainable ecosystem, aware of the value contribution that women can provide, especially in the tech field. Until the next installment.
